皆さんお気づきのこととは思いますが、本家の php-i18n メーリングリストに
次のような投稿がありました。興味深いと思いますのでこちらにも転送します。

摘要すると、以前ご紹介した Derick さんが会社公認 (といっても given
leave) で PHP-ICU プロジェクトを完了させるべく l0t3k さんと動き出し
たとのことです。

もともと私と l0t3k さんで作業していましたが、結局私としてはリソースを
あまり割く事ができず、宙に浮いた格好にしてしまっていたところもあるので
ある面では好ましい動きとは思いますが…。

# ちなみに私のところにはまったく事前連絡がありませんでした ^^;
# といっても、べつに義務じゃないんですがね。

なお、プロジェクトの CVS レポジトリの Web インタフェースが
http://cvs.voltex.jp/ にありますので、どのような形で進んでいるか
ご覧になりたい方はどうぞ。

日本国外では mbstring モジュールは日本語しか扱えないというようなイメージが
強いのかどうかは分かりませんが、前述の php-i18n リストでのメールの流量から
察するに mbstring モジュールは思ったほど使われていないような気がします。
これは少し残念に思います。

一方、もともと Unicode ベースで文字列処理を行っている点では ICU と mbstring は
大きく変わらないのにも関わらず、向こうでは PHP-ICU プロジェクトへの期待が
ちらほら高まっているようですね。

今後 mbstring のメンテナとしてはどうしていくべきかそろそろ考えなくては
ならないのでしょうか。
