ご案内いただいたurlを見ましたら

char and varchar columns was extended from 256 to 8000 in SQL Server 7.0
but the DB library from Microsoft was not updated.
If you want to use wide columns use the text type.
Further textlimit only affects columns of type text.
It has no effect on char or varchar columns.
とありました。
varcharの型をtextに変えるとうそのようにうまくいきました。
一時は「どうしたらええねん」と思いましたがホッとしました。
