 あれ？と思って、私も試してみました。
 以前作ったものからむしり取ってきたので、表示する位置などは変ですが
うちでは EUC で動くように変わっていました。元のソースに
  // メッセージを出力するには UTF-8 に変換しないと表示できない
って、コメントが入ってるんですが...
 ports に入っている --enable-gd-jis-conv が影響してるのかな？
# GD を選択すると強制的に付いて、外すことは(Makefile をいじらない限り)できません。

こんなので、見ることができました↓色々文字コードをいじってみると直るかもしれません。
(原因が分からなければ解決とは言えないですが)
